Most IELTS books teach the test and quietly assume your English is already good enough. If it is not, they cannot help you, and you conclude that you are bad at IELTS. You are not. You were handed the wrong book.

This one starts earlier. 1,247 pages, 210 chapters, and a path that runs from weak English to Band 9 without skipping the part in the middle where the language actually gets built.

Twenty parts, in order

  • Parts 1–2 — Understand and diagnose. What IELTS is, how every mark is calculated, and six real diagnostics with answer keys that tell you where your English actually is.
  • Parts 3–6 — Build the English. A full grammar course from parts of speech to inversion and nominalisation. Vocabulary, collocation, register, paraphrasing, and pronunciation.
  • Parts 7–8 — Listening and Reading. Every question type, with the method, the traps, the timing, and original practice with keys that quote the exact evidence.
  • Parts 9–11 — Writing. Academic Task 1, General Training letters, and Task 2 — with complete model answers at Bands 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, each one analysed against all four criteria.
  • Part 12 — Speaking. All three parts, a daily fluency system, and a mock interview you can run on yourself with a scoring sheet.
  • Parts 13–20 — Topics, strategy, errors, band jumps, study plans and readiness.

What you actually get

  • 210 chapters across 20 parts, Academic and General Training both covered in full
  • 34 original diagrams — the band scale, the rounding rule, the True/False/Not Given decision tree, the tense map, trend vocabulary on a real graph, the cue-card note frame, the criteria compared band by band
  • A complete practice test — a four-part Listening test written as full transcripts with distractors and speaker self-corrections, three Academic Reading passages with 40 questions, both Writing tasks and a full Speaking set
  • Answer keys that show the evidence — every key quotes the exact sentence in the passage or transcript that proves it, so you can see the paraphrase that caught you
  • Model answers at every band — Task 1, GT letters, Task 2 and Speaking, written at Bands 5 through 9 with an analysis of what has to change to move up
  • Nine study plans — 30, 60 and 90 days, two six-month plans, a Band 7 to 8 plan, and plans for working professionals, students and weak-foundation learners, each with a week-by-week table
  • 14 printable worksheets and a 120-term glossary
  • Band-jump chapters for every transition from 5 to 9, each saying what to stop doing as well as what to start

Verified against ielts.org, not recycled from other books

Every official fact in this guide — the format, the timings, the question counts, the band descriptions, the scoring and the rounding rule — was checked against IELTS's own documentation before publication, and is marked inside the book so you can always tell a rule from a strategy.

One thing has just changed, and most IELTS books have not caught up: from mid-2026 IELTS is no longer offered as a paper-based test. Every test is delivered on computer, with a Writing on Paper option in selected markets, and timelines vary by country. It does not change what is assessed, but it does change how you should practise, and this guide says so wherever it matters.

What this book will not do

  • No guaranteed band. Nobody can promise you one, and anyone who does is selling you something they cannot deliver.
  • No essays to memorise and no speaking scripts to recite. Both are visible to an examiner in seconds, and both lower your score. You get flexible frameworks instead.
  • No list of impressive words to insert where they do not belong. That is the most common way people damage their Lexical Resource while believing they are improving it.
  • No invented rules. Where something is set by IELTS or by an institution, the book says so and tells you to check.
  • No fake past papers. Every passage, transcript, essay, letter and cue card here is original material written for this book.

Who it is for

  • Complete beginners whose English is the real obstacle, not the test
  • Anyone stuck at 6 or 6.5 and unable to work out why
  • Students and professionals preparing alone, without a coaching centre
  • Anyone who wants the whole map before spending money on a test attempt
